1. Ancient Period (Indus Valley Civilization – 2800–1800 BCE)

The saree originated as an unstitched drape worn by both men and women.

Early garments were simple pieces of cloth wrapped around the body.

Materials: cotton (India was one of the first producers).

No stitching, no blouse or petticoat — just body draping techniques.

2. Vedic & Classical Period (1500 BCE – 500 CE)

Evolving from the Sanskrit word śāṭikā, it began as a three-piece ensemble:

the antarīya (lower wrap), the uttarīya (shoulder veil), and the stanapaṭṭa (chest band).

This unstitched cloth was draped to allow maximum mobility and suit the climate.

Draping became more structured and graceful.

3. Medieval Period (Mughal Era – 1200–1700 CE)

Major transformation with luxurious fabrics:

Silk, brocade, zari (gold/silver threads)

Mughal influence introduced:
